IMATRA, Finland -- Canada lost more than just its final preliminary-round game at the world under-18 hockey tournament Tuesday. Kirill Pilipenko scored in the shootout to earn Russia a 3-2 win over Canada, the defending champions first defeat at the event. But the Canadians also lost forward Brayden Point to an upper-body injury in the first period thats expected to sideline him for the reminder of the tournament. Russian Danil Vovchenko drove Point head-first into the boards at 7:23 of the first. Vovchenko received a five-minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct on the play. "Thats a huge loss for our side," Canadian team coach Kevin Dineen said. "Hes a big part of so many facets of our game. "He plays on both of our special teams and centres the top line. Hes a big loss but thats the advantage, we have other people to fill roles." Point had an assist in Canadas four preliminary-round games but the five-nine, 160-pound Calgary native recorded 36 goals and 55 assists in 72 games this season with the WHLs Moose Jaw Warriors. Pilipenko scored on Russias first shot of the shootout against Canadian goalie Mason McDonald. But it was all the offence the Russians needed as Canadas Conner Bleackley, Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen all couldnt beat goalie Alexander Trushkov. Trushkov replaced Maxim Tretiak, the grandson of legendary Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak, to start the shootout. "Thats tournament hockey," Dineen said. "Obviously were disappointed it ended like that but you take a breath, look at the big picture and say our team earned points in all four games and finished first in our side of the pool." Vladislav Kamenovs power-play goal with 35 remaining in regulation forced overtime. Mathew Barzal and Travis Konecny scored for Canada (3-0-0-1, 10 points), which still finished atop Group A despite the loss. The Canadians will resume tournament action Thursday in a quarter-final game against Switzerland. Ivan Nikolishin had the other goal for Russia (1-0-2-1, eight points), which needed a win in regulation over Canada to finish first in Group A. Konecny opened the scoring at 1:49 of the second period before Nikolishin replied just 27 seconds into the third. Barzal put Canada ahead 2-1 at 7:40 before Kamenov converted on the man advantage at 19:25. Dineen, who led the Canadian womens team to Olympic gold in Sochi, Russia, said he was pleased with his teams defensive play against Russia, especially with the man advantage. The Russians finished 1-for-5 on the power play. "I really give our guys credit . . . they came out and guys were blocking shots, making plays along the boards," Dineen said. "I give the Russians a lot of credit, they really did a good job with their possession game and created a lot of chances. "Obviously your goaltender has to be extremely large and Mason played a whale of a game for us." McDonald likely earned himself the start for the Canadians in the quarter-final game. He stopped 29 shots as Russia outshot Canada 31-25. "Mason McDonald was the player of the game," Dineen said. "I think its going to be pretty hard for us to pull away from him. "He played a heck of a game." Bud Norris Jersey . The attacking midfielder arrives on a free transfer from Spains Malaga. The 28-year-old joins Scottish striker Kenny Miller and Argentine midfielder Matias Laba as designated players on the Whitecaps roster. Darin Erstad Jersey . Dumont, a fifth round draft pick of the Canadiens in 2009, has four assists and 20 penalty minutes in 12 games with the Bulldogs this season. The 23-year-old split last season between Hamilton and Montreal, recording 16 goals and 15 assists in 55 regular season games with the Bulldogs. http://www.baseballangelslockroom.com/c ... ls-jersey/. New York then missed its next six shots and scored only two points the rest of the night. The Los Angeles Clippers defence and the Knicks general ineptitude both played a role in the unsurprising finish to a meeting of two teams headed in opposite directions. Yunel Escobar Jersey .J. -- The Houston Astros had the No. Rod Carew Jersey . The All-Pro left tackle agreed to a five-year contract with the Eagles on Wednesday. Peters was signed for 2014, and his new deal adds four years through 2018. SAN FRANCISCO -- Jean Machi and the San Francisco Giants ended their six-game losing streak in the most wacky way. They dont care how it happened, any break is welcome these days. A timely, heads-up glance by Machi helped San Francisco take advantage of a huge baserunning blunder by Pittsburgh, and the Giants tagged out of two runners who wandered away on the same play to beat the Pirates 7-5 Wednesday. "Just like we drew it up, right?" second baseman Joe Panik quipped. "We got lucky with that one. Everything happened so quick. Almost like Little League, a rundown, playing a game of Pickle." San Francisco stopped a skid that matched its longest of the season, and avoided the clubs first winless homestand of at least seven games in the 15-year history of AT&T Park. The Pirates, who had won three in a row, led 5-4 in the sixth when Chris Stewart drew a one-out walk with runners on second and third. Machi (6-0) got the ball back from the catcher and noticed Travis Snider had left second base, apparently thinking it was a bases-loaded walk. "Absolutely! It was 100 per cent mental error on my part," Snider said. "Offensively, we could have made something happen. Honestly, I was thinking about getting to third base and if he walked Id get to third. Thats obviously not what you want to happen when you have first open. I take ownership for that mistake." Machi threw to shortstop Brandon Crawford to trap Snider in a rundown. Crawford tagged Snider, then saw Gaby Sanchez stray off third and break for home. Crawford threw to Machi, who tossed back to third baseman Pablo Sandoval to get Sanchez. "You dont see that very often. We got a break there," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I havent seen that. He mustve thought the bases were loaded, going to third." Gregor Blanco hit a tying single in the seventh, and a passed ball by Stewart later in the inning put the Giants ahead. Justin Wilson (3-2) took the loss. Santiago Casilla, San Franciscos fifth reliever after Tim Lincecums short start, earned his eighth save in 11 chances. Jordy Mercer hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Josh Harrison also connected for the Pirates. Buut the blunder on the bases left manager Clint Hurdle baffled.dddddddddddd "You know, I have a buddy and we always talk about how if you watch enough games youll continually see something you have never seen before," he said. "Unfortunately, thats the first time Ive seen us walk into a double play." Bochy met with slumping Crawford before the game about tweaking his hitting mechanics, then moved him up to the No. 2 hole. Crawfords single started a three-run first on a day the Giants runs were more than the six they had total in the previous six games. HARRISONS POP: Harrisons ninth home run was his fourth longball in as many games. The Pirates have nine homers in their last five games. "We call it game-time pop," Hurdle said. SUSACS FIRST HIT: Andrew Susac recorded his first career hit and RBI in the third for San Francisco. Starting at catcher as Buster Posey played first base, Susac was 0 for 5 in four games before his single. He was promoted Saturday from Triple-A Fresno with Hector Sanchez out because of a concussion. "Its awesome. I cant explain how it feels," he said. And the ball from his hit? "I think my dad earned it." QUOTABLE: On his 57th birthday, Hurdle offered: "All I want for my birthday is another birthday. Im good now and could go out tomorrow and have no regrets." TRAINERS ROOM: Pirates: Outfielder Starling Marte needs more time to recover on the concussion list and wasnt activated Wednesday when eligible. He went through his first full workout Tuesday, then had a recovery day Wednesday. He is likely to need a rehab assignment. Giants: Bochy is optimistic of getting first baseman Brandon Belt back from a concussion as soon as this weekend against the Mets in New York, while centre fielder Angel Pagan could play in a rehab game in the next couple of days in Arizona as he returns from an inflamed back. Right-hander Matt Cain was being re-evaluated Wednesday as he tries to recover from an elbow injury in his throwing arm. ON DECK: Pirates: Jeff Locke (2-2) starts Thursday night at Arizona. Giants: Ryan Vogelsong (5-8) pitches Friday night vs. the Mets at Citi Field to start an 11-day, 10-game road trip.
