(SportsNetwork.com) - The red-hot Los Angeles Kings will try to extend their winning streak to a season-high seven games when they visit the Edmonton Oilers for Sundays clash at Rexall Place. The Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference and 20 points out of a playoff spot, have been playing well lately, winning two straight and seven of their last 11 games. Taylor Hall notched the game-winner at 2:31 of overtime in Edmontons most recent victory, as the Oilers downed the visiting New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday. Edmonton scored three unanswered goals to top the Isles in OT. Sam Gagner took the puck off Islanders defenseman Brian Strait in transition through the neutral zone and deked past a sliding defender to fire a shot that deflected off Halls stick and past Evgeni Nabokov into the net. Philip Larsen and Ryan Smyth both lit the lamp in the third period and Ben Scrivens turned aside 32 shots for the win. "Id rather we didnt wait until the last four minutes of the second period to get going," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said. "We have been preaching the way to play and it wasnt until near the end of the second that we understood what we needed to do and we carried it on to the third." Smyth moved past Wayne Gretzky to tie Glenn Anderson for first place on the Oilers all-time power-play goal list with 126 tallies. Edmonton is 2-1-1 on a five-game homestand that ends tonight. The Oilers are 12-15-3 as the host this season. The Kings have won six in a row, matching a run from Dec. 2-14 for their longest winning streak of the season. The last five wins of the surge have come since the NHL returned from its Olympic break late last month. Another win on Sunday would give the Kings their longest winning streak since taking nine in a row from Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010. Thanks in part to its recent hot streak, Los Angeles is still six points ahead of Dallas for third place in the Pacific Division. The top-three teams from all four divisions make the playoffs, while the remaining two spots in each conference are wild cards. The Kings picked up their most recent win Thursday night in Winnipeg, as L.A. kicked off a three-game road trip with a 3-1 decision over the Jets at MTS Centre. Mike Richards and Dustin Brown each netted second-period goals, giving Jonathan Quick and the Kings all the support they would need for the victory in Winnipeg. Alec Martinez added a power-play goal later on to sew up the win. Quick was lightly tested, but aided the cause by stopping 17-of-18 shots. "In the third we kind of slowed down a bit and maybe sat back a bit," Richards said. "But I thought we played well. We didnt do much with (the puck), other than kept it simple and got back to the net with it." The win improved L.A. to 17-12-3 on the road this season. The Kings will complete their trip tomorrow night in Calgary. The Kings have won both meetings against Edmonton so far in 2013-14, but this marks the first encounter of the season at Rexall Place. L.A. has won four straight and six of seven overall in the series and the Kings have claimed eight of the past 10 meetings in Edmonton. Zach Brown Jersey . - UFC 178, previously announced for Sept. One thing was clear to him, however. "This team needs better from me," Young said. Young got hit hard and often in an uncharacteristically poor outing, and the Mariners missed a chance to move up in the AL playoff race, tagged for five home runs Saturday night in a 10-1 loss to the Astros. The Mariners stayed one game behind AL wild-card leader Oakland and a half-game in back of Kansas City for the second slot. The As and Royals both lost earlier in the day. "I didnt pitch as well as Im capable of," Young said. "Im disappointed. Just felt good going in, dont know what happened. Just didnt make good pitches." Chris Carter and Alex Presley hit two-run homers and Matt Dominguez and Carlos Corporan added back-to-back solo shots. Jake Marisnick had a three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Astros snapped a four-game skid. "They swung the bat well," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "They pretty much decided it real early." The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but managed to come out empty-handed, with Austin Jackson grounding into a double play to end the inning. "We pretty much had one shot and couldnt capitalize with it," McClendon said. Young (12-9) gave up seven runs and eight hits in three-plus innings. He also threw two wild pitches. "For the most part I feel like Ive given the team a chance," Young said. "A couple of starts this month I havent, but Ill bounce back." Dallas Keuchel (12-9) pitched eight strong innings, striking out eighth. He also reached 200 innings in a season for the first time in his career. Carter and Presley homered one batter apart in the first inning. Dominguez and Corporan connected off Young on consecutive pitches in the fourth. It was Carters 37th home run of the season, a career high. Nelson Cruz leads the majors with 39. Dexter Fowler doubled and scored two runs for the Astros. Houstonn tied a season high for homers previously achieved April 6 against the Angels.dddddddddddd Jose Altuve got two hits, giving 218 this season. He tied Rod Carew for most by a second baseman since 1937. Carew reached the feat in 1974 with Minnesota. Charlie Gehringer had 227 with Detroit in 1936. Robinson Cano hit an RBI single for Seattle run in the third. Marisnick homered off Erasmo Ramirez, who pitched four innings in relief. The best thing for Young and the Mariners to do is put this game behind them, third baseman Kyle Seager said. "You are at this point of the year, you are in single-digit games left, and we obviously know where we stand," Seager said. "Every game is magnified right now." EYES ON THE RACE With his team in a tight race for an AL wild-card berth, McClendon delayed his pregame media availability so he could watch the end of Detroits 3-2 win over Kansas City. "Its like I tell the players ---- its not often that you get the opportunity to be in these positions," McClendon said. "Cherish them and enjoy the journey, and this is part of it." HES A HIT The Astros honoured Altuve prior to the game for breaking the clubs record for hits in a season. Craig Biggio, who had held the club record of 210 since 1998, took part in the ceremony at Minute Maid Park, which included Altuve being presented with a giant coupon good for 211 bottles of Minute Maid orange juice. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: OF Dustin Ackley, who hit two homers in Fridays 10-5 win, sat out the game because of a bad left ankle. McClendon said he would play Sunday. Astros: RHP Josh Fields remains day-to-day with what interim manager Tom Lawless described as a strain. LHP Darin Downs, who felt discomfort in his right oblique in Fridays game, is also day to day. UP NEXT Mariners RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (14-8, 3.42 ERA), who is 6-3 over his last 10 starts, faces rookie RHP Collin McHugh (10-9, 2.66). McHugh has won his last six decisions and has allowed two runs or fewer in nine straight starts, the longest active streak in the majors.
